BAYOU BARTHOLOMEW: IN FOCUS

Juried Bayou Bartholomew Photography Exhibition

The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas is hosting a juried photography exhibition, Bayou Bartholomew: In Focus, to celebrate this hidden treasure. Twenty-three photographs highlight the natural beauty and cultural significance of Bayou Bartholomew. The exhibition opened January 19th and continues through April 22, 2017.

Juror, Margo Duvall, selected the images that capture the natural beauty and historical importance of this waterway. Photographers include Julie Caple, Mark Cater, Steve Coyle, Jamie Cunningham, Andria Davis, Nathan Hamblen, Barbara Henson, Carol Jackson, Eric Maynard, Jennifer Price, Rita Szabo, and Mitch Wessels.

The exhibition emanated from a conversation with Jimmy Cunningham of the Delta Rhythm n’ Bayous Alliance. He encouraged a collaboration between the Arts & Science Center and Delta Rivers Nature Center as a way to celebrate the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Bayou Bartholomew. Eric Maynard, DRNC director and photography teacher coordinated a canoe trip and taught a streamside photography class and some of the photographers from that day are included in this exhibition. Over the years, many people have worked to reclaim the Bayou’s cleanliness as a waterway and celebrate its use for recreation with Dr. Curtis Merrell and Dr. Bill Layrer as key figures in these efforts.
