Swing, Art, and All That Jazz
An African American Cultural Heritage Camp
July 30 - August 3, 2018
9:00AM - 4:00PM
Explore the living traditions of swing dance and music at The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas (ASC). Under expert supervision, students will practice a different style of dance each day and explore its relationship to music and African American cultural heritage through hands-on activities. Throughout the week, students will curate and produce a video on the history of African American dance to accompany a painting by Palmer Hayden in ASC’s permanent collection. This video will be made available in ASC’s gallery alongside the painting and on ASC’s website, allowing future generations to learn from the students of this camp.
This camp is for gifted and talented 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students in Arkansas. Camp participants do not need to be in gifted and talented programs at their school. If selected, this camp is provided at no cost to the student. To be considered for this camp, please complete the following application.
This camp made possible by a grant from the Arkansas Department of Education.
